BORRIS (BARDZILAUSKAS) AMERICANIZATION
Dated: 01/02/2022
Written by: Julius M. Borris III
Marital relatives of the Bardzilauskas "Borris" family members, including Anthony Boris (Barisas) (1877-1961) and Eva Vartkavich (1875-1928), were first known for their family name, Boris (with only one "r"). Their children, Joseph (1907-1985) & Frank (1912-1943), were born Boris, but during their adolescence, they altered their last name to have two r's; this alteration, or anglicization, happened when Eva was married secondly to Joseph Bardzilauskas (1888-1945). Joseph's first cousins, Julius and Stanley, came to America and resided in Ohio between 1909 and 1912.
According to census relations, the Hamburg and Ellis Island passenger list (recorded between 1909 and 1912) shows that Stanley had a Polish name known as Konstanty (Kon) Bardzilowski [Bardzelowska]. His name changed when it was recorded on the 1920 US Census as Stanley Borris; this also affected his family (wife Margaret, kids Edward, Constant, Veronica, and brother Julius). Stanley & Julius are well recognized in Ohio's Lithuanian community and culture.
Some of Stanley's early children were born Borris, but in the late 1920s, Stanley kept the family name Bardzilauskas. Mostly, all of his children, except for Veronica and Donald, went to serve in the US military.
ENLISTED IN THE US MILITARY
Connie D. Borris (1916-1985): served in the US ARMY as a private (WWII)
Edward J. Borris (1919-2012): served in the US Navy as a Y3 (WWII)
Frances Borris-Bagusinskas (1923-2010): served in the US Army Air Forces as a Sergeant (WWII)
William M. Borris (1925-2010): served in the US Navy as a Gmgc (WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War)
Peter P. Borris (1928-1987): served in the US Army as a Sergeant (Korean War)
Along with Julius's marriage, his child (along with his wife Helen Barnataviciutė), Julius Jr., was born Borris. Julius Junior was not very close to his father in his teenage years, so at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Korean boot camp. He fought in the Korean War against the communists.
